Office of Internal Audit


Newt Hamner is General Auditor for The University of Alabama System.

In his capacity as General Auditor, he oversees the internal audit operations at UA, UAB, UAH, and the UAB Health System and coordinates external audit activities on behalf of the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees.The General Auditor is appointed by the Board and reports administratively to the Chancellor and programmatically to the Board. The General Auditor is responsible for the reliability and integrity of administrative information; compliance with policies, procedures, plans, and laws; safeguarding of assets; economical and efficient use of resources; and determining whether stated administrative goals are achieved. To fulfill these duties, the General Auditor staffs, organizes, and administers the Office of Internal Audit programs on each campus.

Additionally, Mr. Hamner served as Director of Internal Audit for The University of Alabama for more than 30 years.

His professional affiliations include the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA), the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) and the Government Finance Officers Association of Alabama (GFOAA). He is a Certified Internal Auditor, a Certified Fraud Examiner and a Certified Information Systems Auditor.

Newt Hamner earned a bachelor's degree in finance from The University of Alabama.
