Office of Counsel
Ralph H. Smith II is General Counsel for The University of Alabama System and Distinguished Lecturer of Law at the University of Alabama School of Law. As General Counsel, he represents the System in all legal matters and is responsible for the delivery of all legal services for the System and its three campuses, including the retention and management of outside counsel. To fulfill these responsibilities, the General Counsel staffs, organizes, and administers the Office of Counsel of The University of Alabama System comprised of 16 attorneys and 11 administrative and support staff. Mr. Smith also serves on the Chancellor’s Senior Staff in formulating education policy for the System. Prior to joining the UA System in May 2004, Mr. Smith spent 25 years in private law practice in Washington, D.C. and Birmingham.
Mr. Smith is Secretary of the Alabama, Florida and Tennessee district of the Rhodes Scholarship Trust. In that capacity he organizes and administers the scholarship selection process in that region. He has been an officer, director or trustee of numerous educational, charitable and civic organizations.
Mr. Smith received a B.A. from Washington and Lee University, an M.A. from Oxford University, Oxford, England, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and a J.D. from Yale Law School. He is a member of the District of Columbia and Alabama State Bars.
